Bridge Ladies When I set out to learn about my mother's bridge club, the Jewish octogenarians behind the matching outfits and accessories, I never expected to fall in love with them. This is the story of the ladies, their game, their gen, and the ragged path that led me back to my mother.

Fill My Heart With Song

I read 140 pages of War and Peace. That’s all I got. It’s damn good so far. I love the way T. describes physical characteristics most of all. Everyone has a large, medium or small mouth. I slept a lot, walked a lot on pretty tree covered trails and with pine needle floors of auburn. I had my favorite dinner twice, hot dogs and corn on the cob. We went to semi-hidden waterfall and the few people there all swam, some naked. Yours truly stayed apart on the rocks. Ever as it was, ever as it will it be.

What does September look like, writing-wise?

  1. Glad you had a good vacation. Hot dogs and corn on the cob are a terrific combo. No kids in school for the first Sept in 20 years. Hoping to edit the hell out of my WIP.

  2. While you were reading T’s WP, I was reading Iris Murdoch’s The Sea, The Sea, (1978); unusual for me, since I’m not usually a fiction fan. I was hooked for the whole 450+ pages. What a writer she was. September for me is starting a new book. Goal? 500 words a day. Happy Vacation!!

  3. After my column being retired for three years my editor requested I start up again. So…I’m a columnist again. Feels good, feels right. My novel is out and about with beta-readers. I have time to read. Life is is good very, very good.

    • Excellent news, 2ns – I think the world (or wherever you’re syndicated) can stand a little words of wisdom and humor from you.

September – a month of transition is how I see it. Somehow, I’m always coming to The End of a novel. I’ve got to start thinking about what’s next – ideas are one of the hardest parts of writing, IMO.

I’m reading The Overstory by Richard Powers. Whoa.

      • Oh, I’ve been debating using one of my PRECIOUS Audible credits for The Overstory … reading between the lines of some comments gave me pause …. but ….?

        • I know, I was reading some of those comments and almost didn’t get the book.

But – for me, if a story is ranking in the high 3’s or lower 4’s (on Goodreads) I’ll give it a try. I wanted to read it b/c I thought, hey, let’s see how a Pulitzer Prize winner writes. Plus – trees. I learned of it when I got my subscription to Our State mag and the story of the blight of the chestnut trees hooked me – this is the first story.

It’s got an interesting structure. You think it’s nothing but short stories and then, he begins to weave them together in subtle ways.

I’m enjoying it because I think he created some unique characters with depth. The trouble is keeping up with them. I don’t know what you like to read, but I think listening to this book might drive you nuts. I’ve had to flip back several times to remind myself who is who. (this seems to be a common thread in the complaints dept.)

  4. Doggone it. Meant to put this part here!

  6. Volunteer proofing and writing copy.

  7. “What does September look like, writing-wise?”

    Keep on keepin’ on.

Glad you had a pleasant break.

  8. Sent out a musical script to 2 award contests, a request for a grant, sent out a short story, working on another. For me writing is the only antidote for my “what the hell’s going on” blues.
