  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

ENTER MIDLER ABA

Today the video team from HarperCollins came to my mother’s house to shoot the Bridge Ladies. If this doesn’t go viral I don’t know what will. Spoiler alert: you will find out what days the ladies play Bridge. My mother would like Bette Midler to play her in the film.

Who should play me? And don’t say Robert Downey, Jr.

  1. Mariska Hargitay

  2. Debra Winger.

  3. I can’t think of anyone who could play the role better than you could, and believe me, I’ve been thinking about this for ten minutes, checking out lists of Academy Award nominees. I say, get Marisa Tomei. She’d be bound to do a version of you that would be unforgettable, and it would be all hers, leaving you to do the unforgettable true-life version that would remain all your own.

  4. Parker Posey

  5. Jennifer Jason Leigh.

  6. Janeane Garafolo, as usual I am right.

  7. Hair color aside (easy fix, though): Francis McDormand or Edie Falco

  8. Rosie O’donnell

  9. Meryl.

  10. I second Francis McDormand. But Charlize Theron could pull it off and win the Oscar.

  11. Maura Tierney!! And perhaps her friend McNulty would visit the set.

  12. I just love Holly Hunter. How about her?

What’s sort of ironic here (to me anyway) is you wrote a screenplay – or two (?), and if BRIDGE LADIES ends up on the big screen, what a twist of a journey that would be!

  13. Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Lawrence or Kristen Stewart. Oh, Cate Blanchett would be cool also. And your mom’s right on with the Bette Midler thing.

  14. I’m going with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Lisa Edelstein, Jami Gertz, or Ally Sheedy.

  15. Sarah Silverman?

  16. Barbara Stanwyck??
Can’t believe only one person correctly guessed Jennifer Jason Leigh!
