• Forest for the Trees
  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

Ain’t No River Wide Enough to Keep Me From You.

Could you also send a reminder closer to the date?

  16. I love SHRED SISTERS!! It captures the difficult dynamic of some sister relationships like no other book I have ever read. (Is it something about New Haven? As soon as I started reading it, I thought Betsy Lerner sure sounds like someone who’s from New Haven, and Bingo, Hamden even, which is where I grew up too!) Love love love your book, very inspiring.

  17. Carol Horton in Georgia here. I’m in, too! I’m very excited about it!

  18. John C. Krieg

I have received my copy today and looked over some random pages which are the quality that I expected. I have no doubt that I will write a glowing review and have at least one online zine that will run it.

My question is: Is it okay to post that link here, or would you prefer not? It’s not my intention to co-opt your blog site.

    Please advise.

  19. It’s been a long while since I’ve been here, but reading the reviews of your novel has brought me back! Honestly, I only rarely read books published after around 1970, but I’ll be reading yours, in part because I perhaps could have written it myself: my older brother is mentally disabled and my parents appointed me his Trustee and guardian. I’ve lived with this tragedy for more than 40 years. I’d like to join the call on 14 November.

  20. I’ll be there. Donna Barten

  21. Welcome back and please join. The link will be on my events page in the blog. And I’ll post a reminder closer to the date.

  22. What a wonderful evening at Judson Church. It was a conversation I sorely needed, having lost my writing community during a decade on my knees. I felt cosseted by you, and Patti and Chloe, celebrating the work, loving the work, and each other, buoying me up without knowing it. I came home with Shred Sisters, knowing I’m not the only late bloomer. Tonight, I dive in. Remembering your kindness. Jax Peters Lowell

  23. would love to see you on 11/14! count me in!

  30. Hi Betsy,

I devoured Shred Sisters. What a triumph! Not sure how to access events page. I want to be in your book club.

    Thanks,

    Gail Duberchin

    • This from Betsy’s email this morning: Here is the link to the events tab on the website and click on our event. That should take you the zoom page.

    • It’s tomorrow at 7:30. Go to the events tab on my website and the zoom link is there! Hope to see you then.

      • Hi Betsy,

I want to thank you for the inspiration Shred Sisters and the book club online gave me. I hope you will do that again and please continue the blog.

Onto another subject. I ordered the book at my local library–Wilmette, Illinois. It took 2 months for me to get a copy. I read it right away and am told that I need to return it after the 3 weeks because other patrons want it!

I will be shortly sending this review to Goodreads (as I refuse to pay $50 to Amazon to write a review). Hope the review is all right with you.

Shred Sisters is a love letter to anyone who has suffered or is suffering because a family member is addicted to a destructive way of life. It is clear that Lerner accepts and loves all of her characters unconditionally. Her honest in-depth portrayal of her characters takes readers on an emotional roller coaster ride, giving each character an equal dose of sympathy and empathy without prejudice. Though some character responses may feel outrageous and seemingly without cause, Lerner makes it clear that everyone is doing their very best under difficult, often tense circumstances. On the sentence level, Lerner offers a rare completeness that gives readers a total understanding of each character’s internal emotional response. The ending of the story is as inevitable as it is surprising, making the book an enjoyable read from start to finish. All accolades are well deserved!
