  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

  6. Congrats, Betsy! I just got my copy and couldn’t put it down. To me, Shred Sisters reads like a memoir. I mean that as high praise and hope you take it as such. The details are so nuanced and specific it feels like only someone who has lived through such a heartbreaking experience could have conceived of them, especially how the mental illness of one sibling can affect the future relationships of the other. In my case, it was an older brother. He died at 23, but Shred Sisters allowed me to imagine how things might have played out if he had lived longer. That brought me—and brings me—to tears. It also gave me some insight as to choices I’ve made, and in that vein, I particularly appreciate the avoidance of judgment and analysis (not to be confused with therapy). Precipitating factors are not formulas, and sometimes it can take a while to sort ourselves out.

  7. P.S. Fabulous bookcover—now it’s sitting up on my bookshelf.

  8. So wonderful and well deserved. I’m waiting for my library copy and can’t wait to be inspired. Glad you’re in the world while I am.

I wondered about your connection to Patti Smith. What a gift you gave her.

  9. Congratulations, Betsy! You’ve never pissed off the wrong people, and if you have, they have forgiven you.

May you live long and prosper.

  10. Beautiful, Betsy. I’m so excited to hear you in conversation about your book with Patty at Judson Church, and to hear your voice – beyond TikTok. Brava!

I have received my copy today and looked over some random pages which are the quality that I expected. I have no doubt that I will write a glowing review and have at least one online zine that will run it.

My question is: Is it okay to post that link here, or would you prefer not? It’s not my intention to co-opt your blog site.

    Please advise.
