  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

How ‘Bout Me Enjoying the Moment for Once

Dear Beloved Readers of this Blog: I’m gearing up for the publication of Shred Sisters this October. I take P.T. Barnum as my inspiration for marketing. Meaning I’ll do anything and everything. I’ve been writing letters to indie bookstores, sending galleys to BookTok influencers, writing essays to place pre-publication, working on contact lists, planning a launch event, assembling lists of potential podcasts. I’ve honed my pitch, I’ve sent galleys to movie producers, and most important I’m trying to lose weight. I’m thinking I can realistically lose 10 pounds by pub date.

How many pounds do you think I can lose? Also, I’d be super grateful if you’d consider pre-ordering the novel. Pre-orders really help get the book launched.

  1. Congratulations!

Easily 10 pounds by October, so go for 15. Take a walk each day, go a little longer after a couple of weeks. It’s a favorable time of year for walking. Cut the crap (mostly) from your diet and, perhaps best of all, go for some new clothes to fit your newly svelte frame.

Pre-order from Amazon or the local bookstore?

  2. pre-order from anywhere is great. Thank you!!

  3. 10 lbs is definitely doable. My husband is finally on the bandwagon about cutting out as much sugar, and high glycemic index carbs (white foods – white bread, pasta, rice) as we can. It’s easier than I thought! And I’m a bread/white rice fanatic. Anyway – you can make one small change (not necessarily what we’re doing) and that in of itself can shed/shred<– ! those pounds. 😉

Already pre-ordered and I’m taking notes about what you’re doing pre-pub as well.

  4. You can definitely do ten pounds. Maybe even a stone, just for the Brits out there. What helped me was cutting out those sandwiches between dinner and bed. Turns out when you eat before sleeping, your body just shuffles it to the back of your desk, like mail you never get around to reading. Good luck!

  5. UGh losing weight and pitching!!! Are you mad?? If you lose 10 pounds you’re my hero, I’ve been wanting to try to lose 10 pounds for at least a year now… it’s the doing that I have trouble with (I just blame everything on menopause and have done with it).

I am so excited about Shred Sisters, already pre-ordered and am eagerly awaiting October!

Also, for what it’s worth, my only dieting tip is … in the evening when you get that nagging feeling in your belly, you know, right before you go hunting in the kitchen for some kind of snack… that nagging feeling is your body eating the fat stores of the day. So don’t feed it!!

Good luck and good on ya!

  6. “How many pounds do you think I can lose?”

10? Turn it up to 11! Make some noise!

  7. Betsy, my thinking is that you have a decisive say-so in your weight, but you are relatively powerless to make Shred Sisters or any other book a big success — so I hope that you value success in diet more than in book promotion. You only have one body, but you probably have a few more books in you, so please prioritize care of your body. That said, I wish you great success with Shred Sisters.

  8. just pre-ordered!
I love the Finch app (I use the free version) for meeting daily self-care goals. Perhaps that can help you incorporate little habits into your day to get you toward your 10-pound goal.
That said, fully loving and accepting yourself exactly as you are is a worthwhile endeavor and makes losing weight a lot more likely.

    Love you ❤

    • Thank you for ordering a copy! Love and accept myself exactly as I am…radical. Actually, I’m trying. I really am.

      xo

  9. Ordered! Can’t wait. A bunch of Indie bookstores in Rhode Island that I will gladly walk into and suggest they schedule you immediately! And Lord girl, I’ve seen you on Tik Tok. You look skinny to me. Have donut.

  10. Thank you so much!! It’s the camera angle. lol

Would love to come to RI.

    Thank you!!

  11. I’m amazed that a writer of your caliber and platform has to work so hard. While I deeply admire your tenacity, I do wonder just what the Big 5 publishers do? It’s dangerous for them to try to get by on reputation alone. I guess there’s fact checking and editorial input, but my God – has it really gotten that bad? Ordered the new book, by the way.
