• Forest for the Trees
  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

And the Moon Rose Over an Open Field

A friend just forwarded this Substack post to me (you guys aware of Substack? It’s platform for writers to make money from subscriptions – cutting out the middle man — and there’s great stuff on it). Hennyway: this was right up my alley. Love the negative writing vibe. Reminded me of us. Almost did a spit take.

What do you wear when you write, and where?

  1. So glad you’re back! Trying to figure out booktok, looks interesting. I write in my writing office every weekday and sometimes on weekends from about 10-12 or 1 when I’m not going to the pool. Pretty serious. I sometimes wear jammies but lately dress after my toilette so I can be ready to leave for the pool at noon. Pretty serious about that too. 💜

  2. right now, this very minute, i am wearing my fave faded lavender sweats, baggy and wrinkled as my aging skin, with a stain from a raspberry i must have eaten once upon a time but didn’t come out in the wash. my hair is ratty but I’ll pull it back if i go out…if i go out. ..cause i’m tethered to my kitchen chair. yes, writing. in my very own imaginary toad-filled sun-dappled (or not) meadow field.

  3. That substack is fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
I write bouncing around on the Metra trying not to spill the coffee at my feet. I lean my notebook on my bag and try to get through a few sentences that don’t suck before hitting Chicago.

  4. I loved this – and yes! Very familiar with Substack. These pictures about the “writing life” is no different with other social media in general. What is the urge to paint a picture of the perfect life and share it out? Everybody knows how messy life is – and ditto on writing. They HAVE to make it look pretty, and dreamy, and enviable, right?

Kudos to her for calling bullshit!

I wear what I call old woman clothes – buffet pants (meaning anything roomy, non-constricting and comfy), cheap t-shirt from Walmart, socks and Oofos. Charming. I write in my office, which I love. I’m surrounded by the bookcases my husband built for me last Christmas.

  5. “What do you wear when you write, and where?”

I wear common human apparel, and I wear it upon my body.

Substack, yes. I may not have time to see you on TikTok, as I am under so many Substacks. That platform has taken off like a house afire (BTW, this time of year, do be careful with indoor trees, lights, candles, fireplaces, lithium battery chargers, etc. My paying work, dearthsome as it is, includes reviews of fire investigations, and lemme tellya, a house will blaze at the drop of an ember).

  6. When I write, I’m usually wearing a puzzled look, which I often mix and match with a frown.

  7. Alerting us to Substack is the best Holiday Gift you could have wrapped for us! Refreshing to read such snark and angst – especially after my visit with a local bookstore owner who was proudly showing off their over-the-top renovation (beeswax-finished woodwork, bespoke tiled walls and wacky shelving demanding more attention than the books).

And since you asked: my writing apparel normally consists of some assemblage of clothes, along with a 70-pound Labrador Retriever lounging across my feet for added incentive to stay in the %$#^ chair to write.

  8. sounds ideal
