Bridge Ladies When I set out to learn about my mother's bridge club, the Jewish octogenarians behind the matching outfits and accessories, I never expected to fall in love with them. This is the story of the ladies, their game, their gen, and the ragged path that led me back to my mother.

Sooner or Later It All Gets Real

When I was younger and people said TGIF I was like WTF. I knew I would never be the type to live for the weekend. If anything, the weekends were my personal nightmare. Am I a workaholic or do I just like to work all the time? Smelling the roses is overrated. If I have no plans on a weekend, I’m thrilled that I can work all weekend. Even the dog is like, can you fucking walk me? Can you take a break? There are people who will tell you that on your deathbed you’ll never wish you spent more days at the office. Blah blah. Work is my church and state. Gorgeous day? Who gives a shit. Friends in from out of town. Duck! Work is easier than life.

What are you doing this weekend?

  1. What if I tell you my work is smelling the roses?

  2. I prefer to invoke that wonderful quip from the Dowager Countess: “What is…a weekend?”

  3. Yeah, I’m with you. Everyone, pls get the fck away from me so I can work. So today I write from 4:30am to 2:30pm and go to sleep at 7:00pm, so? Then tomorrow I hit at 4:00pm and write to 2:00am, so? I’m there, you aren’t, so pls fck off, hm?

  4. “What are you doing this weekend?”

Working. I am an American. Such is our way. Idle hands make mischief. The idle mind is the Devil’s playground. Work is play. Make hay while the sun shines. A cowboy’s work is never done. Got to rustle up them dogies. Mend that stretch of fence. Plow the lowlands.

  5. I’m in the ‘I don’t dream of labor’ camp, and my job is not one you’d miss over the weekend. The workweek peaked on Wednesday when my new carpet sweeper arrived, then nosedived Friday morning when a patient shouted at me because I couldn’t fit him into the schedule. I’m going to spend my weekend with a book I just started (The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova) and try to toke myself into oblivion.

    • Some good strains: White Widow. Strawberry Cough (my favorite — Indica, not too intense, but fun). Wedding Crasher. And for true bliss, you can’t go wrong with Pineapple Express.
Jim Belushi just opened up a new dispensary on the reservation near here — Belushi’s Farm, or something like that. I think his actual farm is in the Northwest.

      • Pineapple Express! I forgot about that one, and it’s so good. I used to get it all the time. Will definitely be trying the White Widow, if only for the daring name. Marijuana strains, like nail polish and novels, are all about the titling.

  6. I love puttering around the house. A good day is when I don’t have to drive anywhere. We’re having gorgeous, unseasonable weather right now, so I’ll be out enjoying it as much as I can, even if I’m taking down screens and digging up a bed to plant the garlic.
Sunday is my one day off, so a big thing for me is staying up late, maybe even until 11:30. I might not watch a Jim Belushi movie, but I could possibly sample some of his cannabis farm product Then I can sleep in (7 or so) and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. I like work, but I like easing into the day instead of rushing and hurrying about like when I have to be at work by 6 am. Now that it’ll be getting dark by 5pm or so, I might even be able to start on Celeste Ng’s new book.

  7. Weekends are not as preeeeciooooous as they used to be when I worked that corporate job.

I’m working. I’m always working – after I quit dinking about on social media.

  8. Painting my house… I got two sides of the house done this summer/fall. I love painting. It’s good work!
