• Forest for the Trees
  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

I’m So Tired of Being Alone

Friday DAY 10. Double digits. I had a good day. Three new paragraphs. I finally got out of the cul-de-sac I’ve been idling in for days. Got the car into first and got my characters in a new situation. The other remarkable thing about writing today for me was that I ate twenty Kit Kats the night before. Somehow, I was able to push through the self loathing and recrimination enough to type for thirty minutes. One small step for mankind.

What’s your weekend writing plan?

  1. Get up early and do my writing before anyone else is up. It’s so much easier than doing it at the end of the day (like today) . Best get to it…

  2. It’s hard to be alone sometimes, hard not to have a partner, etc., but when it comes to writing, well, being alone is wonderful. I woke up at 4 a.m. this morning and the coffee and writing pulled me, happily, out of bed to get to it. In a quiet way, most unusual for me, I am euphoric. There is no hope, of course, truly none whatsoever. But I don’t give a damn. Many of you often say how you’ve known that you’re a writer, meant to be a writer, will forever be a writer. I defined myself in the same way, and I published enough to prove it, but it is only NOW, I swear to you, in this strange dreamy 30 minutes thing that I’ve come to understand and accept the truth. I am a writer. It doesn’t matter whether I publish or whether I’m read by anyone other than myself. It turns out, for me, that knowing this has been a great awakening. I could cry with relief. My writing plan this weekend is to keep doing exactly what we’ve been doing.

  3. I also got out of the cul-de-sac. Feels good to be on the open road! Today I write and then errands. Maybe tomorrow I’ll schedule a longer writing retreat on the couch next to the fire.

  4. It’s 5:12 a.m. and I’ve done my thirty. I hope to do many more this weekend and am going to try to stay on task and not drift into extracurricular writing activities.

  5. “What’s your weekend writing plan?”

    Same as it ever is.
    To write.
    I write, therefore, I am.
    I am, therefore, I write.

  6. Today is pretty much shot. I will be attending a writer’s group thing in which I need to leave in less than an hour and other chores have circumvented my usual morning work. BUT – yesterday, I wrote almost double the quota, so I’m counting that as a win.

  7. I spent an hour folding my word laundry.
