• Forest for the Trees
  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

You’re My Blue Sky, You’re My Sunny Day

The Outdoor Scientist by Temple Grandin, Ph.D.

I’ve had the great privilege of working with Temple Grandin for over 25 years. The Outdoor Scientist is our latest collaboration for kids. It’s about all the things Temple loved to do in the outdoors as a child interwoven with mini biographies of scientists who were inspired by nature. The chapters are on things like rocks, the ocean, the woods, the night skies, etc. Today it hit the Indie Bestseller List at #9. If you know a kid who might like figuring out the age of trees or hunting for nurdles on the beach, think about buying him or her a copy. Thanks so much for allowing me the public service announcement.

  1. I loved Claire Danes in the movie about Temple Grandin, which was my introduction to her. I have a granddaughter (Abigail, 6) who is mildly autistic. I just went and bought this for her because she is an outdoors, curious nature seeker who astounds me sometimes with her knowledge of what she sees and perceives. Congrats to the both of you!

  2. Will do.

  3. That looks amazing!

  4. Just bought a copy for the lending library at the pediatric therapy clinic where I work. We see lots of autistic kids and Temple’s other titles are very popular. The new one looks terrific, and, whatever a nurdle is, this seems like the perfect time of year to hunt one down. Thanks, Betsy!

  5. Congratulations to you and Temple Grandin! Just last night my wife – a scientist – was on a zoom meeting with a mycologist who discovered all sorts of amazing things about a young George Washington Carver, including finding a packet of spores labeled and signed by Mr. Carver from a long time ago. The world is full of wonder, if only we take the time to look. Keep up the good work!

  6. Congratulations, and well done.
