  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

Girl, You Really Got Me Going

Today is publication date for Eli Gottlieb’s THE FACE THIEF. I just got home from his publication party which was fantastic, which means I didn’t spill wine down my shirt, didn’t blank on people’s names, didn’t raid the medicine chest (I am reformed!), made a toast that didn’t sound like Linda Blair in the exorcist, and shared a quip in the elevator with an editor from a glossy magazine before I hailed a cab and disappeared down Lexington Avenue into a clear city night, the kind I used to love, cold, sharp, and anonymous. But this isn’t about me.

Please treat yourself and read this psychological thriller for the tight, dovetailed structure, for the enigmatic femme fatale at its center, and two men who are her mark. Read it for sentences so good you’ll want to reread them, but the plot will compel you to keep moving forward. Congrats, Eli.

  1. Sometimes hearing about other people’s books being published inspires me. Sometimes it depresses me. Tonight, for whatever reason, is the latter. Possibly it’s the wine.

  2. Between your post and the cover, I want to run right out and buy this book. Except it’s single digits here in Boston and anyway we don’t have 24 hour bookstores – yet.

  3. Ok, I’m convinced. But even if I wasn’t the Kirn blurb that begins, “A dark libido animates this novel that can’t be resisted” slams the hammer down.

(And I was all set to tear into the new Haruki Murakami I just bought. Damn it, Betsy!)

  4. I’m becoming so jaded, Betsy.

“Sentences so good you will want to reread them.”

    “She wanted to fuck him.”

That doesn’t need rereading , and, clearly, you said you didn’t like stories. Maybe I should substitute ‘bitter’ for jaded.
But I’m fine. No, really. I’m fine. Switched to klonopin just today.

    • Don’t be too bitter, Virigina. I just read the first few pages over at *that big online store* and it looks pretty brilliant to me. Any envy I might covet is overwhelmed with awe at the way he strings words together. Can definitely see why Betsy, a poet at heart, would want to rep this author.

Congratulations Eli and Betsy. I’ll be contributing my share to your next royalty check.

  5. Congratulations to you and Eli. Can’t wait to read the book. And here’s to getting a cab home (unlike the NBAs)…

P.S. My husband just finished The Sojourn last week and loved it.

  6. This looks great! Looking forward to reading this. Congratulations and I liked the bit about the toast.

  7. Oh congrats all around. Sounds like you and Eli had a ‘killer’ night. Oh yes I slay me.

  8. And you got the title you wanted! Congrats to you and Eli on what sounds like a great project all around.

  9. This has been on my list for a while, and the author for longer—I love Now You See Him.

    Congratulations to you both!

  10. Sounds great! Looking forward to it.

  11. He sounds marvelous. Congratulations to the whole gang.

Mr. Gottlieb, if you’re listening, what are your thoughts on the cover art?

  12. Pleased to see the title you two were championing won out! (I hope the elaborate marketing survey made a difference.) Congrats to both of you.

  13. Congrats, Betsy. Excited to read some rereadable sentences.

  14. Congratulations to you and Eli Gottlieb. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: The love you have for your work (and your authors) comes shining through, as well as your love for the coolest city on the planet. Hot damn!

  15. Congratulations to you both. I ordered the book this morning, and plan to spend the day with my Kindle hidden on the pull-out tray under my desk. Talk about a hook!

    • That’s funny you should say that because when I was reading the excerpt I was thinking of you. Definite similarities in your writing styles. Both unique, but still similar.

  16. Congratulations to all involved. May canons salute you.

  17. Is it better than “The Litigators” by John Grisham? I’m buying one or the other tomorrow.

  18. Just had a mooch around his website. Saw this bit from “The Boy Who Went Away” about the father drunk behind “the rattling panes of the New York Times”. Great image.

  19. Nice to read about positive experiences! Apparently all the bad stuff has drained my way the past few days…glad I can be of help to others.

  20. Beautiful cover. Congratulations.
