When I first thought of blogging, a couple of people close to me thought it was a bad idea given my “Impulse Control Problems.” I thought deeply about it and decided to take the plunge anyway. Today, I am ending this post in advance of saying some things I should not make public. And yes I want a mental health medal.

What a terrific interview, Betsy. i loved it. You spoke so eloquently and informatively. I found it very helpful and I enjoyed the sound of your voice so much.
I enjoy your blog very much too but now having heard your voice, I know I will love your blog even more. There’s something about the sound of a voice that brings a writer to life.
And you are so much on the side of the writer, but also realistic about the need to promote work, by not being too precious and also by being prepared to do all the hard work, especially the work of following your passion.
I found your talk inspirational and generous. Although you hesitated in relation to the Google question, except that you mentioned it here, I would not have thought you fudged your answer one bit. You have such a balanced way of thinking about these issues.
Wow, is all I can say. The Freudian image in the photo of dog as analyst and cat as analysand, intrigues me too because of my own work.
One day when I finish my PhD I will talk to you more about this. In the meantime, I suspect you’ll get customers out of this interview.
It’s a fine balance, isn’t it? Your voice is wonderfully unique, but there’s nothing wrong with a little reserve sometimes.
I really enjoyed the interview despite the imprecision/rambling/lack of prep of the host. Your voice was a surprise, I think I expected a more boozy gravelly voice. It’s the Anne Sexton vibe.
You made an important point when sharing your thoughts on an author’s platform and being able to differentiate yourself from so many others who also blog and have facebook and twitter accounts, etc. We have to be creative in figuring out how to build our tribes and/or setting ourselves apart in some way. Young voice, old soul–comes through in your writing too. Experienced, but resistant to easy answers. I trust that voice.
