• Forest for the Trees
  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

He’s Just Not That Into You — a seven part series #3 – The Avoider

Ah, the avoider rejecter. This type truly is like the guy who fucks you and never calls back. At least it feels this way. Either way, he’s really, really just not that into you. With every submission we make, we find there’s always at least one editor who goes completely MIA. Even after you’ve called and pitched them a book about Hamas and they tell you they worked on a Kibbutz in high school and would be fasinated by anything about Israel, yes, even these folks sometimes completely disappear. There’s one editor who goes by the nickname Bermuda Triangle because everything you send her gets “lost.” Some editors don’t think they particularly need to respond. Deal with it. Most people don’t like conflict, except those who relish it, and I understand the desire to avoid rejecting something. But again, this is why god invented email, so that writers don’t have to suffer quite as much. After all it’s better to be rejected than to be left hanging. Though for that brief period in between, hope.

  1. Hey, omfg I love you! i have been reading your blog for two hours now. and I love it, you tell it how it is! Made me laugh, smile, & shudder, all at once!

I’m working on my novel, two years in the making but I can’t completely finish it (it has be drafted &redrafted a thousand gazillion times), or fully commit to it, only after I’m done with college. But that’s not saying I am not serious about it. I AM, you have no idea, it’s just that I feel like I have get college out of the way before I can seriously 100% devote my time, self, and all to it. In the mean time I am preparing myself to see how the whole publishing & agent thing works so that I wouldn’t be disappointed in the long run. Just in case I slack of, I have joined a writing site where every week i enter a competition and write a story. (Not that you care, lol)

Anyway I just wanted to tell you that the whole process sounds terrifying and overwhelming but unlike the other agent blogs I read , you made it sound a tiny bit easier. AND it makes me think you people/agents are actually human. lol. Thank you. Thank you for that. And i will be coming for you once I’m 100% sure, its as perfect as can be.

I know you’ve heard it ALL before but my book WILL be published, by god, it will be. LOL.

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.
