  • THE FOREST FOR THE TREES is about writing, publishing and what makes writers tick. This blog is dedicated to the self loathing that afflicts most writers. A community of like-minded malcontents gather here. I post less frequently now, but hopefully with as much vitriol. Please join in! Gluttons for punishment can scroll through the archives.

If I’ve learned one thing about writers, it’s this: we really are all alone. Thanks for reading. Love, Betsy

The New York Times
“Lots of ambitious books announce themselves; this one doesn’t need to. The first novel by Betsy Lerner forgoes all fanfare and conceit as it refines a 20-year coming-of-age into an elegant thread of taut, perfectly paced milestones. The prose is controlled, but neither virtuosic nor spare; the plot, enticing but neither Dickensian nor minimalist. Decidedly un-trendy, crescendo-less and restrained, this tragicomic family saga is a Bach prelude to the Rachmaninoff of a writer like Jonathan Franzen.”

The Washington Post
“Smart, funny and moving . . .this bright, clean, gallivanting story rewards an open mind and heart with crisp prose, fresh plot turns and dimensional dishy portraits we can instantly recognize. Amy’s voice — a perfect amalgam of weary cynicism, jealousy, angsty and steady, painful love — wins us instantly. Myriad scenes will make you want to both howl and laugh for their authentic, helpless absurdity. Lerner delivers a scrappy mélange of Mel Brooks and Sylvia Plath.”

The Boston Globe
“Drama, disappointment, and despair thread throughout this bittersweet saga, but empathy, humor, and the narrator’s sharp yet loving powers of observation make it a joy to read. Exquisitely written, featuring pitch-perfect wit, crackling dialogue, and deep insight into the excruciating pain of being in a perpetual awkward phase…It must also be noted that in an era when so much contemporary fiction is dystopic, Lerner’s debut recalls simpler times, though minus sentimentality or nostalgia. In Amy and Ollie, Lerner has given us a love story for the ages.”

The Financial Times
“Amy and Ollie are the warring siblings in literary agent Betsy Lerner’s accomplished first novel Shred  Sisters …A poignantly engrossing tale for anyone caught in the webs of sibling rivalry.”

Kirkus, starred review
“The younger of two siblings grows up the shadow of her beautiful, reckless, mentally ill sister. ‘Here are the ways I could start this story,’ Amy Shred says, offering three choices in a brief prologue to memoirist and literary agent Lerner’s debut novel. The story unfolds with the verisimilitude of a memoir: Amy’s nuanced relationships with her mother, her father, and her partners are all utterly convincing and relatable. A seamlessly constructed and absorbing fictional world, full of insight about how families work.”

The Sydney Morning Herald
[Shred Sisters] . . . unfolds over decades with great economy and incisive observation of both the inextricable bond of sorority between the sisters, and the terrible suffering that can be inflicted on us by those we love.  Lerner is loath to waste a single word, and the characterisation’s more intensely rendered for that. It’s a tragicomic, wise, emotionally complicated domestic novel that also immerses the reader in the shortcomings of period psychiatry.

Publishers Weekly
“Lerner’s skilled approach to narrative lies in subtly depicting the destigmatizing of mental illness and the evolution of treatment during the period from the sisters’ childhood in the 1970s through the 1990s. Lerner’s portrayal of Amy’s five-year course of therapy is particularly rewarding, as Amy explores the limits and strengths of her bond with Olivia. The result is a quietly lovely and ultimately hopeful chronicle of a complicated family.”

People Magazine
“Beautiful daredevil Olivia is the star of the Shred family, but as she goes off the rails, her parents and younger sister Amy struggle for balance. As told by Amy—the smart, quiet one—over two decades, this heartfelt novel reveals the power of the siblings bond to shape our lives.”

Good Housekeeping
“A sensitive exploration of loving someone with mental health issues, with characters you’ll fall for.”

Daily Mail
“Lerner… is incapable of writing an unnecessary sentence.”

Booklist
“The perfectly named Shred Sisters’ ups and downs are wrenching and felicitous, while Amy is a triumph of clashing emotions, self-sabotage and self-preservation, anguish, loyalty, and love. Aerodynamic prose, psychological acuity, tangy wit, knotty family dynamics, and heady twists and turns make for an exhilarating read.”

Jewish Book Council
“Lerner’s sharp storytelling places her in the canon of Nora Ephron and Judy Blume. Shred Sisters is an honest, intimate, and heartfelt meditation on the ways our toughest loves shape, break, and rebuild us.”

Katie Couric Media
“In this incisive, sharp novel, Amy Shred’s life is shaped by the unpredictable moods of her sister Ollie. Set over two decades, the book follows Amy and Ollie as they each come of age and try to find their place in the world. It’s a moving, keenly observed book about mental health, sisterhood, and family at large.”

“Shred Sisters is a brilliantly written, emotionally gripping saga that delves into the complexity of sisterhood, mental health, and resilience. Spanning decades, this utterly engrossing novel asks readers many profound and pressing questions: Can we fully know the ones we love? Does love always require self-sacrifice? Can we understand ourselves without understanding our family? One of the best books I’ve read in years.” –Chloé Cooper Jones, author of Easy Beauty.

“Betsy Lerner articulates moments I have observed but never put into words, and I both laughed out loud and was deeply moved. A brilliant novel.” —Alice Elliott Dark, author of Fellowship Point

“Wise to the woe and wonder of families and the bedeviling forces that shape them, Betsy Lerner’s masterful new novel, Shred Sisters, delivers you through grief and devastation toward tremulous, exquisite hope.”  -Bill Clegg, author of Did You Ever Have a Family

“A cocktail of raw poetry, needle sharp insights, and propulsive, almost projectile honesty. I can’t get over how deftly it pivots from funny to mean to vulnerable to wise, often on a single page. Lerner explores the contours of complicated relationships with an intoxicating ferocity that – we come to realize – amounts to no less than an act of love.” —Leah Hager Cohen, author of Strangers and Cousins and To & Fro

    Betsy,

Loved the Virtual “Book Club,” and I finally got on Tik Tok to listen to you. I followed your blog, but never had the inclination to do any writing from the prompts. Perhaps I should start.

Can’t wait to see the movie based on you! Good luck on getting your screen play produced. It’s inevitable.

I look forward to your next book of fiction, and I will go back and read your other books.

    Best Wishes,

I’m an Ollie. I have a sister who is 8 years older than me & who just turned 80. She was everything my parents wanted, I the one who gave my family grief & concern. All through my childhood teachers, aunts & friends told me they couldn’t believe we came from the same parents, but honestly I’m way more interesting & my tumultuous life greatly entertained me & those who watched it unfold. All while my sister is still sitting on her hands being good.

So glad I was gifted your book by a friend who’d just read it & wanted my opinion. I sent her a text this morning.

Youngest sister is avid reader and middle sister not so much. Always share books, can’t save them anymore as there are too heavy to move & prefer to downsize b4 I either die or have to downsize and relocate. Rambling. Saw author on Saturday morning news program. Will login after reading.

Almost finished Shed Sisters. Remarkably true to life. Well written and expertly paced. I think we’ve all met Ollie’s in our lives – this examines this behavior through the lens of mental illness and makes it much easier to understand.
